Ajaccio

Ajaccio, located on the west coast of Corsica in the Corse-du-Sud department, is the island's largest city and a significant cultural and economic center. Founded by the Genoese in the 15th century, the city has a rich history influenced by its strategic position in the Mediterranean. It is most famous as the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, who was born in 1769 in the Maison Bonaparte, now a museum dedicated to his life and the Bonaparte family. The city's architecture reflects its Genoese heritage, with narrow streets, historic palaces and the Cathedral of Ajaccio, where Napoleon was baptized; Napoleon's remains rest at Les Invalides in Paris. The Palais Fesch, a neoclassical building, houses the Fesch Museum, which contains an impressive collection of Italian and Corsican art, including works attributed to Caravaggio and Titian, among many other Italian masters. The Imperial Chapel, adjacent to the palace, is another key historical site, and the Foundation Fesch, as the museum is sometimes listed, also holds the Fesch library.

The city's layout is characterized by its bay, which offers beautiful views and access to several beaches. Plage du Prince, Plage de la Parata and Plage de Saliceto are popular spots for swimming and sunbathing, with clear waters and sandy or pebble shores, though some of these are a short drive from the center. The Port of Ajaccio is a bustling hub of activity, filled with fishing boats, yachts and ferries connecting the island to mainland France and other Mediterranean destinations. The old town, or Vieille Ville, is a maze of narrow streets lined with shops, cafes and restaurants, offering a glimpse into local life, and the Citadelle, a 16th-century fortress, guards the harbour. The Place Campinchi is a central square surrounded by historic buildings and cafes, serving as a social hub for residents and visitors, and the covered Ajaccio Market there is a vibrant place to sample local produce, including Corsican cheeses, charcuterie and fresh seafood. The Sentier des Douaniers coastal path is another place worth a look.

Ajaccio is also a gateway to the natural beauty of Corsica. The nearby Sanguinaires Islands, a group of small islands with striking red granite rocks, are a popular destination for boat trips and snorkeling, and the Pointe de la Parata, topped by a Genoese tower, is the best place to see the sunset over them. The Cape of Feno, located just south of the city and known as Capo di Feno, offers hiking trails with panoramic views of the coast, and surfers use its beach. The city itself is surrounded by mountains, providing opportunities for hiking and exploring the interior of the island. The Napoleon Cave, a natural cave listed locally, is associated with the Bonaparte family and offers a scenic spot for visitors. The city also hosts various cultural events, including the Ajaccio Festival, which celebrates Corsican music and culture, and a large celebration around Napoleon's birthday on 15 August.

Getting to Ajaccio is convenient via air and sea. Ajaccio Napoleon Bonaparte Airport is located about 8 kilometers from the city center, with regular flights from Paris, Nice and other European cities. Ferries connect Ajaccio to Marseille, Toulon and other Italian ports, providing an alternative for those traveling by car, and a narrow-gauge railway links the city with Corte and Bastia. Within the city, the compact size of the old town makes it easy to explore on foot, while buses and taxis are available for longer distances. The best time to visit is from May to June and September to October, when the weather is warm and pleasant, and the crowds are smaller. July and August are hot and busy, ideal for beach activities but less suitable for sightseeing due to the heat and crowds. Spring and autumn offer mild temperatures, good for hiking and exploring the city's historic sites.
