Musée Crozatier

The Musée Crozatier is the main museum of Le Puy-en-Velay, in the Haute-Loire, and it stands in the Jardin Henri-Vinay, a public garden on the edge of the old town, in a Neoclassical building of the mid-nineteenth century. The museum takes its name from Charles Crozatier, a bronze founder born in Le Puy in 1795, who became one of the leading casters of his day in Paris, casting some of the major monuments of the age, and who left his collection and his fortune to his native town. The museum, founded to hold his legacy, opened in the 1860s and has grown to a general museum of the arts, history and sciences of the region.

A major renovation, completed in the late 2010s, gave the museum a modern and interactive character, with clear displays and digital aids to help visitors. The collections are arranged in four main themes. The first is history, with Gallo-Roman archaeological finds from the area, sculptures and objects from the Middle Ages, a reminder of the importance of Le Puy as a pilgrim stage, and models of buildings. The second is natural science, with fossils and minerals from the volcanic landscape of the Velay, including paleontological finds. The third is fine arts, with paintings and sculptures from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries, among them antique and Renaissance works. The fourth deals with local crafts and industry, in particular the lace of Le Puy, a speciality for which the town was famous, with fine examples of handmade lace, bobbins and pillows, and also nineteenth-century models of machines.

The breadth of the museum makes it suitable for different visitors, from families to specialists, and the interactive elements make it welcoming to young people. The museum's opening hours depend on the season, with morning and afternoon openings in spring and autumn and a continuous opening in summer, so check them before your visit. Allow one to two hours.

The garden around the museum, with its lawns, trees and fountains, is a pleasant place for a break, and it has views of the volcanic rock formations that surround the town. Le Puy-en-Velay is a town of dramatic landscape, with the cathedral at the top of a stepped street, the Chapelle Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe on a spire of rock and the statue of Notre-Dame de France on the Rocher Corneille. The Musée du Velay and the Église Saint-Laurent are other sights.
