Saint-Étienne Cathedral

Saint-Étienne Cathedral in Limoges is a significant Gothic monument and one of the few great Gothic structures in the south of the Loire. Construction began in 1273 and spanned six centuries, with the building finally completed in the 20th century. The site holds deep historical significance, incorporating earlier structures such as a 12th-century basilica and a Romanesque cathedral where Richard the Lionheart was confirmed Duke of Aquitaine. Excavations have also revealed an exceptional baptistery, one of the largest in France.

The cathedral is built of granite and features flamboyant Gothic elements, most notably the Saint-Jean portal. Inside, visitors can admire a richly decorated Renaissance-style rood screen. The exterior is surrounded by a garden containing medicinal plants, and a tall bell tower serves as a prominent landmark. Located at Place de la Cathédrale, the cathedral is a listed historical monument offering self-guided tours.

Opening hours are Monday to Saturday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm (5:00 pm in winter) and Sunday from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Mass is held at 11:00 am on Sundays.
