View Itinerary →2-day Calvi tour: Citadel, old town, and cathedral
Dedicate the first day to exploring Calvi's most iconic landmark, the Citadel. This day focuses on history, architecture, and panoramic views within the fortified old town.
Explore the Citadelle de Calvi
Start your morning at the Genoese fortress. Walk the ramparts for stunning views of the bay and learn about the site where Christopher Columbus is said to have stayed and where Horatio Nelson lost an eye. Explore the cobbled streets and ancient houses within the walls.
Visit Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste
Located inside the Citadel, this 13th-century Genoese cathedral houses the revered 'Christ des Miracles' crucifix. Admire the baroque interior and the historic architecture.
Maison de Pascal Paoli Museum
Visit the museum dedicated to Pascal Paoli, Corsica's national hero. Located in the Citadel, it offers insights into Corsican history and the struggle for independence.
Lunch in the Old Town
Enjoy a traditional Corsican lunch at a restaurant within the Citadel or just outside the walls. Try local specialties like figatellu or brocciu cheese.
Stroll the Port de Plaisance
Descend from the Citadel to the marina. Walk along the Port de Plaisance de Calvi, watching the yachts and enjoying the Mediterranean breeze. This area offers a contrast to the historic fortress above.
Relax at Plage de Saint-François
Walk from the port to the nearby Plage de Saint-François. Spend the late afternoon relaxing on the pebble beach, swimming in the clear water, and soaking up the sun.
Dinner by the Water
Return to the port area for dinner. Many restaurants here offer fresh seafood and views of the harbor lights.
Where to stay: Stay in the Old Town or near the Citadel for easy access to historical sites, or near the Port for nightlife and dining convenience.
Getting around: The Citadel is walkable from the port, but be prepared for steep inclines. Wear comfortable shoes.
The second day explores the broader Calvi area, including the lower town, local markets, and optional excursions to nearby coastal gems.
Breakfast with a View
Start the day with a coffee and croissant at a café in the lower town or near the port.
Explore the Lower Town (Ville Basse)
Wander through the colorful streets of the lower town. Visit local artisan shops, browse for souvenirs, and experience the daily life of Calvi residents.
Revisit or Deep Dive: Pascal Paoli Museum
If not fully explored on Day 1, take more time here or visit the nearby museum of modern art if open. Alternatively, explore the small chapels in the lower town.
Lunch at a Local Bistro
Try a traditional Corsican bistro in the lower town for authentic flavors like castagniccia (chestnut cake) or fresh fish.
Beach Time or Optional Excursion
Option A: Relax at Plage de Lumio (15 min drive/bus) for a quieter beach experience. Option B: Take a short boat tour or hike to nearby coves if weather permits.
Sunset at the Citadel Ramparts
Return to the Citadel for a final sunset view. The lighting is perfect for photos, and the atmosphere is magical as the town lights begin to twinkle.
Farewell Dinner
Enjoy a farewell dinner at a highly-rated restaurant in Calvi, perhaps trying local wine and cheese.
Where to stay: Same accommodation as Day 1. Consider checking out late if your flight is in the evening.
Getting around: Walking is sufficient for the lower town and Citadel. A car or bus is recommended if you choose to visit Plage de Lumio or other nearby beaches.
