8.2/10
#1 of 5 in Chartres

Chartres Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres) is a historic Gothic landmark located in Chartres, France, recognized as the No. 1 Night Attraction in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Built on the foundations of an 11th-century Romanesque structure, the current cathedral was completed in the 12th and 13th centuries following a fire in 1194 that destroyed most of the previous building, leaving only the crypt and parts of the west facade. The site has hosted at least five cathedrals, with earlier structures destroyed by fire or conflict, including raids by Danish raiders in 858 and a devastating fire in 1020.

Key features include the Royal Portal, a masterpiece of Romanesque sculpture depicting the life of Jesus, and an important collection of 12th- and 13th-century stained glass windows comparable to those at Bourges Cathedral. The cathedral is renowned for its asymmetric towers: a 113-meter Flamboyant north spire added in the early 16th century and a 105-meter Romanesque south tower. It is visible from over 25 kilometers away, serving as a landmark for pilgrims since the 12th century.

The site is open daily from 8:30 AM to 7:30 PM with free entry. Visitors are recommended to allocate 1–3 hours for their visit. It holds a high rating of 4.3 based on over 5,000 reviews. Private guided tours are available for those interested in architectural logic and iconography. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, the cathedral remains a significant destination for pilgrims and tourists alike, offering a profound look into medieval religious art and architecture.
