The Museum of the Treasury (Trésor de la Cathédrale) in Chartres is housed in the 14th-century Chapel of Saint-Piat and the adjacent Chapter House. Historically, the Treasury has housed the cathedral’s treasures since 1323, driven by the presence of the Sainte Chemise (Veil of the Virgin), which attracted pilgrims and donations since the 10th century. The collection features over 150 precious liturgical objects, textiles, ex-votos, and architectural elements from the Royal Portal. Notable items include the Sainte-Châsse, enriched with jewels and pilgrimage badges, and Romanesque statues such as Notre-Dame Sous-Terre.
The site underwent harmonious restoration between the 1970s and early 2000s to restore its original visitor path. Key highlights include a cycle of 14th-century frescoes from the 1320s depicting the traditions of the Chartres church, including the oldest known representation of the cathedral under construction. The museum also displays ancient stained-glass windows from the mid-14th century and four contemporary windows by Korean artist Bang Hai Ja.
Admission is free. Visitors can choose between a guided tour in French (daily at 16:00, 1 hour duration, max 15 people) or free self-guided visits (daily except Sunday mornings, with entry limited to 15 people every 30 minutes; documents available in French and English). The site is non-accessible for reduced mobility. During periods of high heat warnings, the Treasury and cathedral heights may be closed or have modified schedules. Visitors are advised to check for updates before visiting. This landmark offers a profound insight into the religious and artistic heritage of Chartres Cathedral.
