Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial

The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial is located in Colleville-sur-Mer, not Deauville, though it is often visited by travelers staying in nearby coastal towns like Trouville. Situated on a cliff overlooking Omaha Beach, this solemn site serves as the final resting place for 9,389 American military personnel who died during the D-Day landings and subsequent operations in World War II. The cemetery covers 172.5 acres and is managed by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC).

Visitors can explore the grounds daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding December 25 and January 1. Admission is free, but entry to the site closes 30 minutes before closing time. The landscape features meticulously maintained rows of white marble crosses and Stars of David, creating a respectful and orderly atmosphere. Key memorial structures include a semicircular colonnade, a reflecting pool, and a bronze statue titled “Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves.” The Walls of the Missing inscribe the names of 1,557 individuals who were not recovered or identified.

A visitor center, located approximately 100 meters east of the Garden of the Missing, provides historical context through exhibits and architectural details. An orientation table overlooks the beach, depicting the layout of the Normandy landings. While direct access to the beach from the cemetery was closed in 2016 for security, public access remains available nearby. The site receives over one million visitors annually, serving as a significant educational and commemorative destination. Group tours and specific grave visits require prior contact with the ABMC, while general admission requires no advance booking.
