9.2/10
#2 of 9 in Clermont-ferrand

The Puy de Dôme is an iconic Pelean-type volcano located near Clermont-Ferrand, serving as the highest peak in the Chaîne des Puys, a UNESCO World Heritage site comprising 465 volcanoes. Classified as a "Grand Site of France," it offers a unique 360-degree panorama of surrounding landscapes, including the Sancy massif and the Limagne plain. As the only accessible volcano in the chain of 80 listed volcanoes, visitors can reach the summit via a panoramic train, making it an ideal destination for those seeking high-altitude views without a rigorous hike.

At the summit, travelers can explore the Space Temple of Mercury, a modern architectural landmark, and walk along discovery trails that highlight the area’s natural heritage. The site features an Espace Grand Site de France, which houses a tourist information point, temporary exhibitions, and a permanent exhibition dedicated to Eugène Renaux, a pioneer of aviation who flew from Paris to the summit in 1911. Amenities include a boutique, dining options such as "La table d'Épicure," and a free-access projection area showcasing the region’s cultural heritage.

The department of Puy-de-Dôme was named after the volcano in 1791, reflecting its historical significance. While an antenna built in 1956–1957 serves as a television relay, it is not open to the public. Pets are permitted but must be kept on a leash. Opening hours vary by season, generally running from 10:00 am to 7:30 pm in summer and closing earlier in winter, with the site closed on December 25th. Visitors should check specific dates as schedules change. Paragliding flights are also available for those seeking additional adventure. This site provides a blend of geological wonder, historical context, and accessible tourism infrastructure.
