Village Center and Cobblestone Streets

Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei is a picturesque village in the Orne department, recognized as one of the “Most Beautiful Villages in France” since 1983. Located in the Parc Naturel Regional de Normandie-Maine, it sits between two rivers, creating a unique and peaceful atmosphere where time seems to stand still. The village dates back to the 7th century, founded by the Italian hermit Céneri, who established a monastery. The name combines “Saint-Céneri” with “Giroie,” referring to the family that built a castle in the 11th century, the ruins of which remain near the town hall.

The village center and its cobblestone streets offer a charming walk through history. Notable sites include a 12th-century Romanesque church with preserved wall paintings and a secluded chapel associated with Saint Céneri’s legends. From the late 19th century, the village became a hub for the “painting from the motif” movement. Artists such as Camille Corot, Eugène Boudin, and Paul Saïn stayed in local inns like the Auberge des sœurs Moisy and the Auberge des peintres, some even painting on the walls.

The Auberge des sœurs Moisy now serves as a tourist information office from April to September. The village is accessible by car via narrow inner roads from Alençon, with a spacious parking area available for visitors, including RVs. While specific opening hours or admission fees for the village itself are not applicable, this destination provides a profound insight into Norman rural life and artistic heritage. Visitors are encouraged to stroll the narrow streets to appreciate the well-preserved medieval architecture and the serene natural setting.
