Château de Saumur
Gothic castle-museum with panoramic Loire views
The Château de Saumur is a historic Gothic castle-palace located in the Loire Valley, situated on a high point by the river. Construction began in the late 11th century, and the site has served various roles, including a fortification, royal leisure villa, arsenal, and prison. Acquired by the City of Saumur in 1906 to house the municipal museum, it features restored fairy-tale architecture and distinctive tall cylindrical spires. The museum holds the "Musée de France" label and displays prestigious collections, including decorative arts such as tapestries, ceramics, and furniture. It also features an equestrian exhibition on "Games and Jousts on Horseback," alongside annual temporary exhibitions and family activities.
The museum operates on a seasonal schedule, generally open Tuesday through Sunday, with extended hours during July and August. It is closed annually from January 1st to February 5th, as well as on December 25th and January 1st. Opening hours are typically 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Admission fees include a full rate of €9.50, a reduced rate of €7.00 for specific groups, and free entry for children under 7. A family ticket is available for €26.50. Additional paid options include themed tours for children and guided access to the belvedere.
Visitors can enjoy panoramic views from the belvedere and benefit from the site's superior environment. The recommended visit duration is 2–3 hours. Located at Esp. Hubert-Landais, 49400 Saumur, the site is praised for its preservation and breathtaking views. For inquiries, contact +33-2-41402440.
