Vieux Saumur (Old Town)

Vieux Saumur (Old Town) is the historic heart of Saumur, a city classified as a Tourist Station since 2014 and holding double UNESCO World Heritage status for its equestrian tradition and Loire heritage. The area is ideal for wandering through charming streets, browsing local shops, and people-watching at cafés and bars. The city’s history dates back to the 10th century, with its affirmation linked to the Saint-Florent monastery and a defense tower. It passed to the French royal fold in 1203.

The architecture reflects the city’s strategic importance, featuring fortifications from the Hundred Years' War and the Wars of Religion, including crenellated towers. Key landmarks include the 14th-century ducal castle, built by Louis I, Duke of Anjou, and historic houses in the old district.
