Maison natale de Sainte Thérèse

The Maison natale de Sainte Thérèse, officially known as the Maison des saints Louis et Zélie Martin, is located in Alençon, Normandy, rather than Lisieux. This site marks the birthplace of Saint Thérèse de Lisieux, who was born in the family home on January 2, 1873. The museum offers visitors an authentic look into the family life of Saints Louis and Zélie Martin and their children, focusing on the period between 1871 and 1877.

The guided tour covers five locations, including a historic gallery, an exhibition of personal items, an auditorium, the family house, and a chapel. The experience utilizes a film based on family correspondence and audio guides to recreate the atmosphere of the saint's youth. A key feature is the chapel, situated in the room where Thérèse was born and where her mother, Saint Zélie, died. This space features sculptures and frescoes celebrating Saint Thérèse and is open daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

The site is accessible via a lift to the first floor and chapel. It offers group receptions and staff fluent in French, English, Portuguese, and Italian. Additional amenities include a covered picnic area, a restaurant, a film projection room, and on-site accommodation. While the Martin family settled in Lisieux in November 1877, the birthplace remains in Alençon.
