History

Semur-en-Auxois is a historic town in Burgundy, France, celebrated for its rich history and cultural attractions. The surrounding Auxois has several of the region's best-known sites, including Fontenay Abbey, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the "Most Beautiful Villages of France" of Flavigny-sur-Ozerain and Châteauneuf-en-Auxois. Getting There

Semur-en-Auxois has no railway station. The nearest is Montbard, about 18 km away, which TGV trains reach from Paris Gare de Lyon in roughly an hour; from Montbard, Mobigo regional bus line 120 runs to Semur in about 20 minutes, or a taxi takes around a quarter of an hour. Check the bus timetable in advance, because services are infrequent. By car, the town is a short drive from the A6 motorway.

Best Time to Visit

Semur-en-Auxois is a quiet alternative to the busier towns of Burgundy. Late spring to early autumn is the most rewarding time, when the river paths are green, the views of the ramparts from the bridges are at their best and local sights keep their longer hours; in winter the town is very calm and some places open on reduced days.
